Name my dog!
October 6th, 2008 by CatSo I've been a little preoccupied this weekend.
And here's why:
This little Pomeranian and Toy Fox Terrier mix puppy was at a pet store for months. She wasn't as cute — or as fluffy — as the other puppies. But I just couldn't resist her adorable face, her animated ears, her mellow personality. She's a bolt of sunshine!
But — I don't have a name.
I was talking with our resident pet blogger Leslie Kawamoto — read her blog, Island Tails — yesterday and she said it took her about a week to name her poi dog. So I shouldn't be worried that I haven't come up with a name yet.
Still. It's hard to call a dog without a name.
I need help!
So here are her personality traits:
• Alert
• Intelligent
• Energetic
• Mellow
• Sweet
• Cuddly
• Curious
• Obedient
• Attentive
• Playful
Got any name suggestions?

"Gina"
You will be calling her. Others will hear you calling her. It has to be short (no more than two syllables), with no hard sounds for comfort to the mouth and ears, and something that 100 other dogs on dog beach or in dog park won't answer to. Ok, it is a human name, but not one that every third human has.
She's adorable.

Simple - Dog. You got da Cat and now you have da Dog. If too simple, then Doglas.

October 6th, 2008 at 7:59 am
I get soft heart for puppies
How about Tee Cee (TC, Town and Country)
Like #1 said (sorry I get hard time pronounce the name) keep the name short. Easier to call her. You can give her long name, but eventually it will probably come down to initials or something real short.
October 6th, 2008 at 8:06 am
Congrats on your new friend. She is adorable! I would recommend Ginger for a name. She was our dog until we lost her 2 years ago. She was the best, smartest, kindest and most beautiful dog ever. I would love to see another wonderful dog named Ginger. Gotta go... crying.
October 6th, 2008 at 8:14 am
Very cute! Glad you finally got a pet...It will really bring joy to your life! It is weird not to have a name (we took awhile to name our kitten the other year), but I would take your time until you think of something that you really like and think fits well. Try coming up with a few names and calling the puppy those names. After doing it a few times, some names just won't seem to match. Then you can eliminate those from your short list.
October 6th, 2008 at 8:23 am
This face is so precious. How about naming her Chloe (it's a fave name for me) or Haiku (a little poem in motion)? Congratulations on our pup, so adorable.
October 6th, 2008 at 8:24 am
Pikachu, no I'm kidding
How about Hele?
October 6th, 2008 at 8:31 am
Cute doggie! Both our dogs had different names the first 24 hours we had them. We gave them names that we thought reflected them, found that those names didn't roll off the tongue as easily as we hoped and the names just didn't feel right for them. So, they got new names that fit better without deep meanings (and their new names are "human names" as opposed "dog names").
October 6th, 2008 at 8:34 am
What about Makamae which means "precious or cherished"...or short Maka which means "favorite one".
October 6th, 2008 at 8:39 am
Hi Cat …
Love the puppy …
Strange that although you describe her both as energetic and playful, you also say she’s mellow. I guess maybe different moods of the day?
How’s this for a name. I thought it was cool, though I don’t know what you’d think.
SPICE as in
Sweet
Playful
Intelligent
Cuddly
Energetic

Adobo.
Just don't walk your dog in Waipahu.
October 6th, 2008 at 8:51 am
How about Evanston for Evanston, IL ("Evi" for short) :o). You can borrow my dog's name if you want--Cha Cha. Or what about Chachi? I guess it basically narrows down to what category you want your dog's name to fall under (e.g. Asian, local, etc.).

Keiki, small and cute
October 6th, 2008 at 9:01 am

October 6th, 2008 at 9:14 am
Sunny is cute too.
I love Lose Money's suggestion too.

October 6th, 2008 at 9:34 am
Luna, the boss
October 6th, 2008 at 9:38 am
Wow, these are great names! ("Governor Palin" made me laugh!) We actually tossed around some of them, like Foxy, Ginger and Chloe. My bro likes Yodette (female Yoda) and Cocoa. His girlfriend likes Katsu. But I'm not sure if I want to name my pooch after fried food...
October 6th, 2008 at 9:47 am
Congratulations on your new companion!!! Dogs are a blessing, they never judge you or hate you, all they do is support in all they ways that you need when no one else is there......I suggest "Bailey"... Good Luck!!

I generally prefer human names for pets. Only thing that came to mind was Megan, after Megan Fox. Since you once harped on you didn't have a Japanese middle name, here is a list of Japanese female names and their meanings.
http://www.20000-names.com/female_japanese_names.htm
A story on political correctness: Some 20+ years ago, my malihini geometry teacher told us how she had to rename her dog Lily. Turns out her Hawaiian neighbor had heard her calling her pup Liliuokalani. On the spot she strongly voiced her disapproval of naming a dog after the Queen. It was Lily from then on.
October 6th, 2008 at 11:17 am
how about 'rihanna'?
October 6th, 2008 at 11:23 am
How about "Fuud"?
I think she looks like a Sascha or an Abby (like "Dear Abby" the wise advice columnist).
Or you could name her "Nosy" because she has an adorable nose and she's described as "curious."
October 6th, 2008 at 11:30 am
I guess for me it would be Megan Fox. For you, if you named it after a Megan I could see it being Megan Abubo.
October 6th, 2008 at 11:51 am

October 6th, 2008 at 12:36 pm
She looks like a Hoku, a star!!
October 6th, 2008 at 12:46 pm
Since you are the "Cat", I agree with "hemajang" that you should go with "Dog".
But do it with style. In the written form the name will be "Dog". But verbally, say it as though you're spelling it out. as in "Dee-oh-gee".
Kinda cool because when someone asks you what the dog's name is you say "Dee-oh-gee" to which they will likely ask what that means. Is it a Japanese name? Is it named after someone? And you simply get to reply, "No, it's just 'Dee-oh-gee' as in D-O-G".
Clever, cute, funny.. just like it's owner.

Sorry for the bad news, but here's a quick course in pet-ownership.
NEVER buy a puppy from a pet store! No respected breeder would EVER sell their puppies to a pet shop for just anyone to buy with a credit card. A good breeder wants to know exactly who is going to get one of their puppies that they have invested so much time and care to further the quality of the breed.
All these pet shop puppies come from Puppy Mills across the country. Their mom is back in some awful 2 x 2 wire mesh crate banging out pups for not-so-smart consumers to overpay. Pet shops pay anywhere from $50 to $150 per puppy from puppy brokers and sell them to $500 to $3,000, depending on the breed. The mark-up is staggering. If people keep buying these "cute" little puppies, puppy mills will continue to breed hundreds of dogs in terrible and unsanitary conditions. Every time a dog comes into heat, they find a male to mount her and then throw him back in the a crate with all the other male dogs kept only for impregnating female. It a vicious cycle. Does anyone ever wonder what happens to those puppies that don't sell after six-months??? It's not a pretty picture. BUY ONLY FROM A REPUTABLE BREEDER. IT WILL COST LESS AND YOU"LL KNOW ABOUT HEALTH,TEMPERAMENT AND WHAT THE PARENTS ARE LIKE. You won't get that from a pet store puppy. Thanks. Sorry to be so harsh, but we need to get educated about pet shops and put them out of business. Dan (I saw all this on a 60-Minutes segment last year and it made me sick.)

Chiro (chai'-rdo; brown)
October 6th, 2008 at 1:39 pm
Just remember that what ever you call your dog, you will be yelling her name in public. Imagine yelling "sunshine" to scold her... Really entertaining...
October 6th, 2008 at 2:27 pm
heh heh...stay away from "adobo"
but you did say it was a poi dog right Cat?
then I gotta go with: E. Leo
October 6th, 2008 at 3:31 pm
Beamer - Sun beams, beaming
Hau'oli - the way she makes you feel and her overall disposition
Ember - warmth, fiery, still has that sunshine feel
Abby - short for abigail, i think it has something to do with Joy.
October 6th, 2008 at 3:52 pm
What a beautiful little girl!! I know you will find much joy with your new companion. What about Mochi for her name?
October 6th, 2008 at 4:01 pm
So, the new year is approaching and you recently broke up with the boyfriend and things are changing in your life.
In japanese the term "re-starting" is saikidou...i think she looks like a Saikidou
or "strong spirit" in japanese is kigai
I am sure you already knew these?...just friendly reminders to still my best ever professor!
October 6th, 2008 at 4:14 pm
Ahh, what good is a little dog? Might as well get a Cat. Dog gotta protect the house, protect its owner and its owner's family.
Big, bad, scary. Good dog.
But if you're going all soft on me, used to have a dog called Snoopy back in the day. We disciplined him once, and he tried to commit suicide by jumping out the back of my friend's truck. He was a good dog, if you fell asleep, he'd lay at your feet and attack anyone who came near, baring his fangs and growling all mean kine.
He was a real man's dog. But he's in Dog Heaven now.
Actually, I kinda like Mochi. When you step on her, Mochi Crunch.
Kiddin!
October 6th, 2008 at 4:25 pm
Congratulations on the puppy...she's so cute! She's sweet and cuddly and looks like she's got spunk...how about Chica?
October 6th, 2008 at 4:55 pm
I like names that are the opposite of what the dog looks like.
I had a all white dog named Spot.
For this cute little muffin, how about something like TIGER! Or WOLF.
Some tough name, General Patton, Rock, The Crusher.
You get the idea.
October 6th, 2008 at 5:06 pm
Looks like a Gigi or Joy to me.
October 6th, 2008 at 5:19 pm
cute puppy!! i love dogs! my dog's name is rascal... well, 'cause he was! i was going to name him warubozu ("waru" for short), but my son wanted rascal. he's actually a really good dog (not too warubozu!).
since mochi was mentioned, i thought of "kinako," since she's tan-colored.
October 6th, 2008 at 5:20 pm

October 6th, 2008 at 5:34 pm

October 6th, 2008 at 10:14 pm
I'm feeling......Gizmo. Just don't feed her after midnight.
October 6th, 2008 at 10:28 pm
Hello! Since it's been cruising at the pet store for months while waiting for a caring owner, I think the name "Koa" would suit her nicely. Koa would represent strength, versatility, and beauty. What do you think?
At any rate, I hope you enjoy the happy times with your puppy.
p.s. Thinking about it....Happy is a nice name too. Happy is probably the feeling you felt when welcoming your pet to your life and home. Yup, Happy is an awesome name too. : )
Take care.
October 6th, 2008 at 11:51 pm
She's cute!
How about "Sasha"?

Cat,
A friend has a dog named Dog, but pronounced "Diogee" as in D-O-G.
We named our little puppy Dobbie, short for Adobe.
October 7th, 2008 at 6:18 am
Whoops just read posts above and saw name "Adobo". Hope people don't get the wrong idea about my puppie's name. He's a black sheppard mix. Hope people don't think Dobbie is a play on Adobo.
October 7th, 2008 at 6:27 am
To "Puppy Mill" Dan
Dude, your info is good to know and I share your views but don't trash Cat for what she did. Realize as she posted that her puppy was at the store for awhile and not "adopted". She had compassion for this puppy and probably saved it from what you described of dogs that are not sold. As for myself, we volunteered with our local animal shelter to foster an abandoned puppy (someone just dumped the litter in a box at the door of a local animal clinic). It was only several days old, the mom couldn't be located. We eventually adopted him.
October 7th, 2008 at 6:39 am

Congrats on your new pooch...Considering the situation you described the pup to be in..I think "Skidrow"...sounds cool...maybe "Skid" for short....Good Luck
October 7th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
Hi Cat!
When you described your sweet puppy as,
"a bolt of sunshine", I immediately thought of
the name, "Daisy" which also fits your pup's
personality. Good luck in finding a name!
October 7th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
Try a name that brings a smile to your face.....
my husband was a big hockey fan and named our puppy Gretsky....we still smile when we think of him (in dog heaven now)
maybe your favorite sport/past time can inspire you...
October 7th, 2008 at 5:38 pm
How about 'Minnie Mouse'? You could call her 'Minnie' for short.
Or 'Minnie Me' (still 'Minnie' for short).
I have two cats (both picked up as kittens from the side the road, not
from a pet store 'Dan' will be happy to hear). One is named 'Tiny Tim' since we found him before Christmas, and one is named 'Mickey Mouse' (for no good reason). We call him Mickey or Micks for short. We call Tiny Tim 'Tyler' for short (don't ask me why -- his name just morphed into Tyler or Tye Tye).
October 7th, 2008 at 9:39 pm
She kinda looks like a "Lucy"!
October 8th, 2008 at 3:26 am
Cat,

How about "Mi`i" for your puppy's name? It means "pretty" in Hawaiian.
Or "Inu" for obvious reasons.
Perhaps "Neko" to be cryptic and fun. When you're asked, "Why Neko?" Just say, "Because she's Cat's dog!"
