Your happy thing

June 29th, 2009 by Cat

Pop icon Michael Jackson and actress Farrah Fawcett died last Thursday.

Several thousand protesters made their way through Tehran in Iran this weekend to protest the country's disputed presidential election.

The U.S. government anticipated North Korea would fire a long-range missile toward Hawai'i. (At least Matson reached an agreement with the three unions that represent its captains and crewmembers to avert a strike.)

In all, it's been a busy week packed with distressing news.

So I spent most of last night looking for something cheerful to write about on this back-to-work Monday.

Then I came across this relationship blog entry on Glamour's Web site.

The blogger asked a very simple question: What's one thing that makes you happy?

Her response was taking goofy photos of her family and friends. Simple, easy and equates in happiness. I was sold.

Except I couldn't think of just one thing that made me happy. So here are a few — and you'll notice most are food-related.

Photobucket
Seeing Sunny so happy at the Hawai'i Kai dog park.

Photobucket
Surfing in clean, not-so-big-I-worry-about-my-life conditions.

Photobucket
Going to outdoor concerts, like the Wildest Show In Town, which featured John Cruz last week, at the Honolulu Zoo.

Photobucket
Cupcakes of any kind, especially these mini ones from Cute Cakes.

Photobucket
Glazed donuts from Kamehameha Bakery or Liliha Bakery, shown here.

Photobucket
The teriyaki fries from H&T Burgers in Windward Mall.

Photobucket
The slush float from Rainbow Drive-In, especially on a hot summer day.

Photobucket
Ice cream cones, preferably chocolate-flavored.

Photobucket
Shave ice. Anytime.

What about you?

Any of the food items shown above would suffice. And, for me, it is watching cats play. Not the feral kind, the pet kind.

Cat, I feel the same way - we have to be glad we have all the good things in life that make us happy. I have to add two things, tho - FRIENDS - you have to have them, and cherish their part in your life. Nobody makes it out alive without genuine, good friends.

The other is LOVE - I recently reunited with an old friend after 13 years. The odds were pretty slim that we'd run into each other after all this time. On top of that, we WORK a couple blocks from each other! The best part is that as soon as we saw each other again, and our eyes met, it was like a lightning strike - a HUGE massive amount of positive energy hit us both, and we're sharing and feeling and falling...

...This happened out of nowhere, and now it seems like what we're experiencing toghether now was meant to be; was predestined years ago, when we knew each other, only as caring friends...

SHE is the best of the best in my life...my "HAPPY THING"...

This is a great thought for the start of our work week!

    - Fun, relaxed timed with family
    - Catching up with friends, old and new
    - Laughing
    - Regular exercise, preferably in our gorgeous outdoors and with a view
    - Energizing, fresh, healthy, good food
    - Making time for my personal hobbies, even if they are pointless to everyone else but me!

My happy thing is walking laps around Liliuokalani Gardens in Hilo.

I am not the only one who feels like this.

Wayne Joseph who wrote an article in Hawaii Tribune Herald last week (June 22, 2009) in his Running With Big Dog on "Exercising is a walk in the park" said, "We are so fortunate to live in one of the most beautiful spots in the world. The view from Liliuokalani Gardens is absolutely breathtaking. Mauna Kea, Hilo Bay and the Gardens are all reasons for me to be grateful to be alive."

He interviewed a guy who walks 10 to 20 laps (3 to 6 miles) almost every day. He asked him if he ever got bored. The guy said, "I never get bored walking around the park because of the view. ... You get to see the mountains, sometimes snowcapped, the ocean and the greenery of the park. ... I can feel the tranquility of the park and feel the cool ocean breeze all at the same time. The park is also a very beautiful and safe place to be at."

Hawaii is like this. There are so many other beautiful spots all over the State that makes you feel happy, simple things like walking on the sand barefooted at Ala Moana Beach Park or just walking around Kapiolani Park or on the bikeway path in Pearl City.

Hawaii people are truly blessed. We live in one of the most beautiful spots in the face of the earth.

  15. Scott:

Yesterday, late afternoon. Swimming at Sunset beach and my older dog who always thinks I am drowning came out to swim with me nearly 75 yards from shore, while my wife, son and other dog sat on the shore. A rainshower cleared out half of the people on the beach and we had 100 yards each way with no one else on the beach. Perfect.

  16. Ynaku:
