Your 'cleaning the house' playlist

November 10th, 2009 by Cat

It's been awhile since I've asked you for your current playlists.

And I never needed suggestions more than Sunday, when I decided to pull everything from my closets and do some major purging. It was borderline renovation.

I had boxes of old letters, containers of handbags I never use, an entire shelf of shoes I don't think I've worn in this century. It was time to toss.

I tend to clean with music. It's the only way to keep me moving, keep me going. I tend to press shuffle on my iPod, left to be surprised about what song plays next. Sometimes it works; other times, like yesterday, I hear songs like "Heavily Broken" by The Veronicas or "Summertime Rolls" by Jane's Addiction and, well, I'm more inspired to veg than vacuum.

I've never thought about putting together a "cleaning the house" playlist until now.

I need something upbeat, something fun, songs like "Down" by Jay Sean or "3" by Britney Spears.

Video of Jay Sean's "Down."

Watch Britney Spear's "3" video.

But I'm not adverse to the classics such as Madonna's "Open Your Heart" and Jet's "Are You Gonna Be My Girl."

What else should be on my playlist?

Hi Cat,this list should super-charge your vacuuming, and put a little zest in your get-up-and-go cleaning action.:Rush,-2112,Temples of Syrinx,Trees. Led Zepplin,-Bring it On Home. Sniff n The Tears,-Drivers Seat. Janes Addiction,-Go,Been Caught Stealing. In that order.I can see those dust bunnies runing for cover already, and Mr.Mop singing "(Cat)Baby Come Back".....

  11. Scott:

When I was young we had a Portugese housekeeper who would come once a week. She would turn the radio to some crazy Portugese station and sign along for 3 hours straight all throughout the house. I don't know why I am telling you this...

  12. Rosette:

sometime I wonder what is good marry a messy person or a clean freak.....! when I shop for clothes I make sure I can wear it as I age so I don't have to constatnly clean ..I GOT ENOUGH WORK...

  13. matt:

when I'm doing something repetitive, the Flower Duet from Lakme is pretty soothing.

  14. EMM386:

I like peppy, higher tempo songs when I'm cleaning, so...

    Sick Day by Optimus Rhyme
Honey Man by The Brian Setzer Orchestra
Gone Daddy Gone by The Violent Femmes
    Short Skirt/Long Jacket by Cake
Twist and Shout by The Beatles
    Wild Ones by Those Darlins
Desolation Row by My Chemical Romance
Bad Girlfriend by Theory of a Deadman
    Seether by Veruca Salt
Little Girl by DJ Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse feat. Julian Casablancas on vocals

I bought an old place as a weekend refuge. Instead of a place for relaxation, it has taken my weekends to make it habitable and fix it up. The building was built in 1870. When I bought it in April, no one had lived there in 30 years, and the inside was pure 1970s. Anyway, I have a number of language programs on my iPod, and I've learned a lot of Greek, Arabic, Italian, and French while doing my household projects. I am good for about three hours in any one new language before my brain says "no more;" give me something I recognize. I find that the language courses are a better fit with household work than the music on my iPod is.

  16. ragavibe:

pandora radio or last fm flowing from the computer speakers. housework will be done in no time.

  17. JB:

I often listen to Pandora also or iTunes radio--they have tons of great free stations!

You're a lot younger than I am, so my choices may seem weird--but I find these kinds of sonce can get me through tasks like exercising or cleaning:
It's Raining Men -- The Weathergirls
Whatever (I Had a Dream) -- Butthole Surfers
I Want Candy -- Bow Bow Wow
    Toxic -- Britney Spears
    Sunshine Love -- C&K
    Molokai Woman -- Willie K
    Wonderful Night - Fatboy Slim

The genius function on the iPod is a convenient way to get music similar to a song you are currently listening to.

  18. Mr. Xu:

One Foot in Front of the Other by Bone Symphony.

  19. NSDGR:

I prefer the purr of the Dirt Devil.

    It keeps me going.

  20. Manoa Mist:

Might be a little old, but nothing more upbeat than Cars Greatest Hits.
Let's Go! I like the nightlife, baby.

  21. Rosette:

THE truth I don't listen to music when I clean I move too much ....when my husband is away I rip carpets out..so no time to turn the music on or off.! One time I rip a whole wall....and stairs fix the whole dud of a house!

  22. Rosette:

yes he comes home no carpet!

  23. Rosette:

I get focus when I clean especially lifthing a dining room table out...darn table....now I figure hmm..should I just move and keep it neat or what...I have old junk but I am too lazy to clean now ...I JUST WAIT FOR MY BOYs TO inherit my junk..I still have record music in the corner if I really need music ..I have many old music ..I like many different type of music.

  24. Max:

I'm not sure what needs to be ON your playlist, but Britney needs to come OFF. Just say "no" to Britney Cat!

    ;-)

  25. Max:

Speaking of Jane's Addiction, I thought their 2003 release "Strays" was quite good! To me, my favorite J.A. song is "Then she did..." from Ritual de lo Habitual. Of course, that one certainly falls back into major veg out mode!

I would say now to get yo' booty shakin' for some cleanin' would be ummm...

Danko Jones! That is some high energy stuff there!

  26. tony Roberts:

I just love the Kings Of Leon, have you tried out http://www.legal5ounds.com - you can download all their albums there!
