Tired of Tiger

December 7th, 2009
By Cat

First, there was the car crash. Then alleged marital woes. Then mistresses — seven at last count. And now the media is reporting everything from lack of seat belt use — OMG — to police finding a measly $235 and two iron golf clubs in the SUV.

Is it just me or is this whole thing with Tiger Woods, the world's No. 1 golfer and confirmed careless driver, borderline overkill?

Sure, you can make the argument that he's a public figure, a role model of sorts, and, of course, is held to a higher standard than, say, you or me. But the media frenzy surrounding the Nov. 27 crash, in which Woods drove his Cadillac Escalade — good think he was driving his sponsor's vehicle! — into a fire hydrant and then a neighbor's tree in the Isleworth community where he lives with his wife, Elin Nordegren, and their two children, seems a bit much.

It seems like every news and entertainment channel — from CNN to E! News — is reporting detail after detail about Woods, his alleged affairs (the latest being to porn star Holly Sampson), speculation about what happened, how his wife must be feeling, what this means for professional golf. It's out of control.

And now we find out he wasn't wearing a seat belt. Stop the presses.

Is it just me — or is anyone else tired of Tiger?

    Good morning Cat! :)

    Tiger who????

  2. jaydee:

Stick a fork in this story it's done!!

Yes, I'm tired of reading and hearing about Tiger's private life. But it sells air time and newspapers so the beat goes on, and on, and on....

I love Williams Sonoma store. I love to cook and it's a gourmet chef's dream store....even if it is a bit pricey!

    Takoyaki you say? Hmmm....

  3. Scott:

I'm actually enjoying all of this. I was tired of his smugness and horrible attitude on the course. I'm a single digit handicap golfer, near the same age as Tiger, been following him for 15 years now (even have a Tiger encounter story to tell....no I'm not #11), but in a twisted way, I'm enjoying watching him be outed for the disguisting pig he really is. It's sad for me, watching my once role model be exposed for having such low morals and being an all around bad guy. I'm a grown man though, think about the impact he's having on young golfers right now. Just sad.

  4. E:

    So tired of Tiger. Bleah.

On a more upbeat note....I own the ebelskivers pan (I call it the pancake balls pan) and have had many, many, many hours of fun with it. I've stuffed these pancake balls with nutella, hersheys kisses, sausage and cheese, cream cheese, etc....well, you get the idea. In fact, I used it this weekend, put some peppermint bark in it.
You can also make gingerbread pancake balls and stuff it with lemon curd. YUM!

  5. ragavibe:

woods is old news. but thats the kind of society we live in........always itching to see what's going on in celebraties lives....and the media is eager to feed us more of that garbage. all about demand. in tigers case....he was crystal clean in the publics mind until this mess popped up. its just snowballing now.
oohhhhhhh ebelskivers! first had that in solvang, california back in the 70's. great gift idea!

  6. rayboyjr:

    :D :D :D Good Morning!!! :D :D :D

... Hi Cat ... not a Tiger fan ... but I do applaud his accomplishments as the world's best golfer ... other than that, I don't care ...

... yes, sick of it ... media making too much of it ...

... the one part that irks me ... is he got away with crashing his car ... on a public street without being questioned ... he should be scrutinized and questioned about the accident by police ... just as would any other person in this country would have been ...

... what excludes him??? ... just can't stand his attitude anymore ...

... ok, nuff already ... forget Tiger ...

    ... I'd rather have the Cat!!! :D ...

  7. maxcat:

I've never had ebelskivers, but they look really good. Like both pancakes and waffles and the idea of a filled pancake is really appealing. Hmmm, it certainly looks like it would be a whole heckuva lot better than like making one pancake, putting it on a plate, putting some neat stuff on top, that is chocolate, caramel, beeries, butter, whipped crea,, creamed cheese, etc., and then covering it with another pancake. Yes, it may be a splurge, but I want one.

Oh, hmm was there something else in this blog, trying to remember. Hmmm, forgot, but in a possibly related vein, our local (Northeast Ohio) Time Warner Roadrunner provider says the price of some TV programming is going up. They want to know if subscribers think we would have them Roll Over or Fight back (resist price increase). Obviously, they are setting us up for a price raise. I replied that they should cancel CNN, Fox, MSNBC, E! and if BRAVO (owned by NBC) puts one more idiotic 'Housewives' show on to cancel BRAVO too (but, I would miss Top Chef). TV is getting shallower and shallower, if I want to hear about other stuff I'll GOOGLE, Bing or Ping.

Yes, I am tired of Tiger. Very tired of Tiger.

  8. papaya:

I agree, it is a bit much. But I think many of us get hung up on stories of infidelity and egos-gone-overboard because we're so irritated with this kind of behavior. It's just too common. So, to a certain extent, I am glad when the media blasts people for bad behavior -- both the illegal and immoral types -- because some things are just not okay even if they're categorized as one's own "personal" business. And you can't just selectively get press for all the good stuff. I was never a huge Tiger fan, but I definitely have lost a ton of respect for the guy since gaining insight into his character.

So even when stories get sensationalized, many normal people pay attention because we're upset and appalled, not just for the fun entertainment factor. Too bad stories of higher moral caliber don't get nearly so much press or talk time. But would that do anything to encourage higher moral standards in our country anyway?

  9. Cat:

rayboyjr: Good idea! I should start a scandal about myself. Car accident, crazy nights at the club. Maybe my hit count will improve! :)

  10. frankie:

Me thunketh that it's because Tiger had such a polished, good boy image that the schadenfreude is immense among the proletariat and the media, of course, feeds the people what they want.

I'm not surprised at all. Tiger is a rich and powerful celebrity. He is not the first of that type to commit adultery and he certainly will not be the last. What I am surprised is how much condemnation he has received vs. others who have been caught. Most of the public didn't abandon Bill Clinton, David Letterman and Jude Law when they got caught, but many of Tiger's fans are leaving like UH fans. I guess the color green is more important than black or white.

  11. frankie:

**UH fans during the 4th quarter of the Wisconsin game

  12. WildeOscar:

Considering Tiger's odd golf-driven upbrining, public adulation, media attention, vast wealth, general physical fitness and good looks, I'd say he's done well to keep things as together as he has. For where he's been, he's got his head screwed on about as right as anyone could - might want to use the seatbelts though to keep it attached to the rest of his body and avoid injuring a passenger should his body go projectile in another crash.

  13. Punaluu:

    E:

I noticed in your comment you mentioned lemon curd. I have been trying to find this item for quite a while. Found a recipe in the paper for lemon poppy seed muffin and my daughter wanted me to make it. One of the ingredients was lemon curd which is something I have never used. Went to the grocery store and could not find it. Someone told me it's in the jams and jellies section but still no luck. Can you or anyone else tell me where to get lemon curd?
    Would really appreciate it!!

  14. Max:

Well, it could be worse... he could be hitting up underaged pages in the senate/house halls... In the scheme of things, who cares. It's his and his wife's bidness...

Oh, and I'm not "enjoying" it the same as another here, for a couple of reasons. One, kids are involved. I don't care if the guy is a saint and had one transgression or if he's a serial playah and has seven mistresses. A family has been wrecked, and to me, that isn't a feel good story.

The second reason, the reason it won't die, is because some people "enjoy" it. That's why it is on the news and tabloid shows everyday... To get those people to watch.

OK, off to make some mid-day pancakes. You made me hungry Cat!

  15. rayboyjr:

Cat … ooh … so you wouldn’t be averse to do something scandalous, huh?!!! …

car accident??? … no good … nothing good ever seems to come out of that … wild night of clubbing … maybe … let me know if I can help you out on that one *wink* … kidding! …

… but no, please don’t ruin that pristine beauty pageant image of yours ;) … a scandal might just bring down your hit count … you’d be in the news for sure … but then people might abandoned your blog …

  16. joekalihi:

Man deserves his day in court. Until then, I won't condemn him.

  17. E:

@ Punaluu....here's the recipe I use....basically a lot of egg yolks and butter and sugar.

If you can't open it, it's from the Food Network site...courtesy of Alton Brown.

    http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/lemon-curd-recipe/index.html

Good luck and let me know if the recipe worked for you!

  18. Windward Side:

A good break from Jon and Kate Gosselin. Boooooring.

  19. SittingInLimbo:

Cat! I was done when it first came out! Who cares!

  20. Punaluu:

    E:

Thank you so much for your help! Really appreciate it. Will try it hopefully, next week.
    Punaluu

  21. turk fontaine:

Some philosopher, maybe it was William James, ( I slept thru a lot of classes), observed that societies tend to slowly spiral down to the most vulgar elements contained within them.

If so, that would explain a lot about modern American life:

Pornography, Jerry Springer, hooker clothes on 8th grade girls, Reality TV, most other TV, slasher movies, Jerry Springer, The tabloidization of all news media, Shauna Goya' s ODDS&ENDS, my comments on ODDS&ENDS, Jerry Springer - you get the picture.

Our obsession with Tiger is part Roman Coliseum.- Heroes, put to the sword - a spectacle of destruction, and it's part of that really weird and to me, unexplainable human phenomenon of "downward comparison" where the tribulations of some are cause celeb for others. i.e. "It's not enough that I succeed, my competitors must fail."

It's a waste of time. There are bigger fish to fry. We got trouble, right here in River City; with a capital T

  22. Ed:

tired of all this about Tiger, too. By the way the roads in his subdivision are private owned and maintained by the residents.

The lemon curd recipe from Alton Brown works. Be sure to use all of it on the same day, it doesn't keep very well. That's why you can't find it in stores.

  23. oldshoes:

Is it just this Tiger scandal in particular that caused u to be irked? Because i for one was p o 'd at the mindless over kill of all these high profile stories.Especially that jon and kate nonsense. Over and over again these knucleheads were in the news.i say again---in the news! They are celebrities? hahaha. what they do and say is news? hahaha. Then it was Casey Anthony.yes for tragic and sad about Caylee. But when is this buggar gonna go to trial already?? And they were reporting everything on the mother from her hair ,to what she eats in jail. And Sarah Palin, another non-story.At least till she announces she's running for president. These b.s. stories should be on a seperate channel-The B.S. Network. Not lead stories on legitimate news networks like CNN & HLN. At least then we know what were getting. There is too much REAL news out there needs to be reported and reported truthfully and accurately. At least from the left and right sides. Informative stories that can tell us what we need to know about health care, the war, cover=ups,Blackwater, swine flu...etc, etc. Tiger having affairs doesnt sway me one way or the other to buy Gatorade. If their truely was a story about Gatorade, its that one should be concerned about all that high fructose corn syrup.

  24. Jorge:

I thought he had 9 mistresses?

  25. Ron:

Is the Tiger Woods story "old"? Yes. But, by claiming privacy and giving an inadequate explanation, he opened the door for every news organization to dig around to see what they could find. So now, the dirt is catching up to him in terms of what he did in his "privacy".

Think about it a moment. Spending personal time with "seven" women in "private", and having an expectation that it remains so -- that's mighty high expectations. And, the thing that brought the house of cards down was his texting at an ungodly hour of the morning that caught Elin's attention. So, it was he and no one else that brought himself down.

In a nutshell, it's a mess. A real mess. And, the media finished off what Tiger started, and left with an inadequate explanation -- and now we know why.

  26. oldshoes:

Hold on...breaking news. somebody just taken from Tiger's home on life support. Reportedly a female. Yikes. Could all this barrage of media overkill just drive somebody over the brink? Stay tuned....

  27. Ron:

This incident is taking a life of it's own, and the situation is not good. We're going to hear more (new) developments in the days to come. This story is not over yet. Most unfortunate.

  28. jaydee:

Turns out it was Elin's mother:

    "Elin's Mother Taken to Hospital"

  29. Kim:

The pancake pan looks interesting - is it stove top or can you also bake in it?

  30. Elapo:

This is a case of "the little head telling the big head what to do". If Tiger wants to turn this around, he should start donating money on the street even include a turkey and ham. At least $500 person should turn public opinion around. He can easily afford a couple million. He won't do it though since people like him don't think with their brains.

  31. WildeOscar:

@tf, I cant quote or even paraphrase William James, but it was H.L. Menken who offered the observation that no one ever went broke by overestimating the vulgarity of the American public.

  32. diane ako:

On the bright side, it's better than hearing about the recession. Momentary distraction.

  33. Jorge:

    Tiger had 10 mistresses.

  34. theDman:

    Seven?

I only got 3 on my scorecard...who are the other 4?

Yeah, his behavior is uncalled for. I can see a gf on the side, but only one, not 3, and certainly not 7!

  35. James:

It's in the genes. It's in Tiger's genes. I mean mens' genes. We all have it in our genes. Any man who says it is not so is lying. We think it, but apply self-control or whatever, or maybe women no like us and get turned off and run the other way, so we don't have a problem, but Tiger? ... women flock to him like flies to a honey comb. He was taking advantage of the opportunity and living out his life to the max fulfilling his physical desires ... nine mistresses and still counting? Woweee! Cheers to Tiger? He should have remained single and have all the fun in the world like Wilt Chamberlain without having a raging wife come chasing after him with a golf club.

We pay for our indiscretions. Tiger will. His life is tainted and will not be the same. That is a given. Like anything, however, it is how he is going to react to this adversity and come out of it still in one piece like Bill Clinton and his affair with Marylou Lewinsky and David Letterman and his staffer which are mild compared to Tiger's plight.

I hope he comes out okay. I don't know about his marriage, however. It is going to be pretty hard to save it. One thing, his golf game is not going to change and it is something he can hang on to for dear life while his home life is crumbling.

  36. Michael:

Happens when one is in the public eye and has no privacy. I am sure many people expected Tiger to womanize. Like a sailor having a woman in every port. Matter of when.

What is amazing is so much speculations and assumptions on what is going on? No one knows what is really happening. Rumors of this and that. What is News and what is Tabloid News?

I am sure all those who speak for or against Tiger, let those without sin cast the first stone. I can't.

  37. Windward Side:

    @James- It's in Tiger's genes or jeans.....LOL!
