Shakey's returns; any others?

February 16th, 2010
By Cat

Earlier this month Hungry Lion in Nu'uanu closed after 27 years.

It was one of a slew of longtime local businesses closing in this economy. And it doesn't look like this trend is slowing down, either, with some businesses — for example, in the Aina Haina Shopping Center — expected to shut down this year.

But sometimes with loss, there's a gain.

Take, for example, the news that Shakey's Pizza, which first opened in Waimalu in 1964 and shut down 14 years later, is returning to the Islands

The chain pizza parlor — which once had locations in Kāne'ohe, Waipahu and Honolulu on Rycroft Street — will be opening its first restaurant in three decades on Feb. 24 at Waipahu Town Center.

I may not be the biggest fan of chain restaurants — though I couldn't have been happier dining at Tony Roma's for Valentine's Day! — but it's nice to see that a beloved pizza parlor is making a comeback in Hawai'i. I mean, I'll be standing in line for one of Shakey's classic thin-crust pizzas and famous golden-fried chicken

Which made me think: what other restaurants — or even businesses — would you like to see re-open in Hawai'i? Let's get the list started!

  1. NaPueo:

    Chico's;
    For their chicken and fries.

  2. oldshoes:

Sloppy Joes and more salad bars. Couple more Hooters Sports Bars would work. And more REAL ice cream parlors. Where Archie and the gang can enjoy REAL malts.

  3. Max:

Single- or twin-theatres like the old Kapiolani, Kuhio and Cinerama theatres. It was nice not having to drive to a mall to see these movies, but park in the area, have dinner at a restaurant, and casually stroll to the movies! It was also nice to not be around a ton of people... although I enjoy crowds for the blockbusters, I like the smaller venues for the more artistic- or drama-oriented movies.

And of course, the main one I miss is (drumroll):

    VARSITY THEATRE

...and how fun was it to watch a movie at the Waikiki #3 with the organ player?

  4. maxcat:

Wasn't the old Shakey's radio promo: "At Shakey's they serve fun also pizza?"

Anyway. I used to like Coco's when Aku hung out there before it was Hard Luck er Hard Rock Cafe.

  5. maxcat:

  11. M:

    Hello Cat!

Chico's was my hang out with the gang every weekend...I miss Chico's. :(

  12. Chicken Grease:

Ah . . . bring back one that just recently closed: The Charter House at Ward!!!!!!

And then bring back Pioneer Chicken. THE best fried chicken on the island, ever (trust me, I'm a Chicken ;) ).

Shakey's should give 20% discount, at least, for EVERYTHING on the menu, for their first month. You know . . . for LEAVING this place in the first place (shame on them).

  13. Chicken Grease:

Yeah!!! Chawan Cut said it first!!!! Pioneer Chicken -- you are SO the man, chawan (thanks for ya'll kudos Ed's thread not too long ago :) ).

  14. Michael:

    Scotty's

    Magoos Pizza

    Ed and Don's Ice Cream.

I forget many so long time ago.

  15. Laurie:

Bobby McGee's, waiters had to dress up and drinks were served in toilet bowls and bathtubs.

  16. Jufi:

Yes. Charter House at Ward. I miss that place!

  17. Chicken Grease:

    Sorry, I misspelled . . . Chowder House.

flamingo's by the Blaisdell and by the old honron bldging

    chuck wagon

    perry boys smoggy in waikiki

    kaneda's

  23. Manoa Mist:

Chicken Grease, I agree that Pioneer Chicken had the best chicken strips, but I'm not sure you should be out there promoting chicken-based products. Seems a little risky to me.

  24. RedZone:

    Chicken Alice.

  25. Ron:

I second @NaPueo. Chico's pressure cooked chicken and fries! Classic college night and weekend fuud. I was just thinking about it the other day.....

Jolly Roger and Chunkies. Hard to get into that cruisin' classics feel without a true drive-in, not a drive-through window.

Mama's Mexican Kitchen on N. School street for their chips and salsa.

Okay, and how many of you have been going through Masu's withdrawals.

Still wished they had McCully Chop Sui for late night dining.....

  26. jamrus36:

    Buck's Sweetbread

John Lennon and George Harrison. Karen Carpenter too.

  27. AJ McWhorter:

I miss KC Drive Inn for their peanut butter shakes, the irony of it all is now when I go to their former location I get my blood pressure, weight and temperature checked out since it is now a doctor's office!! And then I find out maybe, just maybe I had way too many of those peanut butter shakes!

  28. changie:

Horiuchi Saimin Stand (in Waipahu). They made the best homemade noodles, dashi and tasty wontons.

  29. Bu:

    Last!!

Only a lolo guy would comment so late.

Anyway, all good memories in the above.

There used to be a good shave ice place in the 70's on school near Nuuanu. Good flavors...

Uncle John's in Waikiki where they had a make it yourself sundae - a vanilla softserve and a carousel of toppings like hot fudge, caramel, sprinkles, peanuts, marshmallow fluff, and strawberries and since it was a breakfast place there was always maple and other flavors of syrups on the table.

Godfather's Pizza. Loved their deep dish!

    Bring back the drive-in theaters!!

Woolworths, Coffee Manoa, Jolly Roger, Lynn's Deli in Ala Moana, Chunky's, Alex's Drive-Inn & Burgerland, Third Floor...

And lastly, real huli huli chicken!
